Hellloooo people!!!

In this post, let’s talk about the very basics of fashion which no one tends to focus on and which is often an overlooked aspect of fashion.

Yes, that is the manufacturing process of the garment, which includes each and every step of the garment or dress preparation – but not in detail, as I would not wish to bore you people out, therefore only the gist of the process will be discussed here.depicts complete journey of manufacture of dress

To begin, I want you to imagine one of your most beloved dresses as we go further.

Imagine standing in your favourite dress, feeling its fabric against your skin—the softness, the drape, the colour that speaks to you.

Have you ever wondered about the journey this garment undertook before it became a part of your wardrobe???

Today, we’ll peel back the layers and uncover the major steps from raw materials to the finished product.

Let’s take a closer look at the fascinating world of garment manufacturing, where creativity meets craftsmanship to bring fashion to life.

Understanding the Manufacturing process:

The manufacturing process can be categorized as 4 stages:

  1. Fiber stage
  2. Yarn stage
  3. Fabric stage
  4. Garment stage

Fiber stage –

depicts the cotton fiber the foundation of garment

                                                        cotton fiber

Well, the fiber is a small hairlike structure which serves as the foundation – raw material for the final garment. The fibre stage involves extracting the fibres either naturally from plants or through synthetic means. In this stage, the fibres undergo rigorous cleaning to remove impurities and prepare them for further processing.

The type of fibres used depends on the characteristics of your favourite dress. For example, if your dress is designed to be non-water absorbent, then the fibers are most likely synthetic, such as polyester.

Yarn stage –

a special string made from tiny fibers

Moving on, the cleaned fibers are spun together to form yarns – a special string made from tiny fibers. These yarns are long, continuous strands of fibers that act as a foundation in fabric formation.

This yarn stage not only involves spinning the fibers into yarn but also incorporates textures to the yarn to impart specific properties such as elasticity or bulkiness, affecting how the dress feels when worn.

Additionally, the dyeing (coloring) of the yarns is done to achieve the color of your dress.

Fabric stage

depicts the fabric where made either by weaving or knitting processes

Once yarns are ready, they are then converted into the fabric either by weaving or knitting processes. Weaving involves the interlacing of yarns on a loom, creating a structured fabric, while knitting involves interloping yarns to produce a more flexible material.

After creating the fabric, it undergoes a series of finishing treatments to enhance their appearance, feel (texture) and performance i.e. functional properties.

The finishing treatments include bleaching, dyeing, printing, and applying chemical finishes for wrinkle resistance, water-proof etc.

Garment stage –

Finally, we arrive at the garment stage, where the fabric takes its final form. Here, the fabric undergoes various and thorough inspection for any defects or shrinkage and sent to the cutting section where it is laid out and cut into the pattern pieces.

These pieces are then sent to the sewing section, where the different parts of your dress are assembled together into a complete garment.

garment stage, where the fabric takes its final form.

Following assembly, the dress is sent to the washing and later to the finishing department which includes ironing, adding tags and labels, ensuring it meets quality standards.

Once approved, garments are packaged and distributed across the stores where you bought your dress.

BY THE WAY CHECK  This versatile cotton dress embodies sustainability through its breathable fabric choice, adaptable design features like elastic smocking and adjustable fit, and maternity-friendly versatility, promoting longevity and reduced environmental impact. In this blog post, I delve into lesser-known functional aspects and sustainability of fashion, highlighting how the dress’s soft cotton fabric and thoughtful design contribute to comfort and durability while supporting ethical fashion practices. Care recommendations further emphasize durability and energy efficiency, aligning with ethical fashion principles.
