The Fashion Chronicles:
The secret Life of a Fashion Designer
Helllllooooooooo peopleeee!!!!!
I’m back, after dayyys!!
I was in my examination period, so I couldn’t give you an interesting topic to chit chat about.
Alright!
Let’s not delay any further.
And also, feel free to check out the previous blog posts if you haven’t yet, where you can learn about the journey of your baby dress which you cherish so much – how it takes birth and what it goes through to reach you!
So today, I came up with one of the most important topics to discuss, which is often known only from one side.
The topic is – What does a fashion designer really do?
So, tell me –
Have you ever looked at a cool T-shirt or a fancy dress and wondered, “Who came up with this awesome design?”
Who decides how your favorite hoodie looks or what makes that dress so cool?
It’s all thanks to a fashion designer!
Fashion designers are like artists, but instead of painting on a canvas, they create the clothes we wear
When you think of a fashion designer, what comes to mind?
Sketches of glamorous dresses, perhaps, or maybe someone flipping through a set of fabric swatches in a chic studio?
Well, you aren’t wrong.
But do you think this is what a fashion designer does every day?
If you do, then you are wrong here.
While these are indeed parts of the job, the reality of what a fashion designer does is much more diverse and complex.
Let’s reveal the secret life of the fashion designer step by step.
- The magic of inspiration
- Sketching the dream
- Choosing the perfect fabric
- Making the pattern
- Making the first outfit/sample
- Making lots of clothes
- Showing off the collections
- Staying creative and updated
These are the major roles that the fashion designer plays.
Let us explore in detail.
GETTING INSPIRED: WHERE DO IDEAS COME FROM?
Every awesome outfit starts with an idea. But where do fashion designers get their ideas?
Looking around –
Designers find ideas everywhere.
They might see the colors of the sunset and think, “That would make an awesome dress!” Or maybe they notice the cool patterns on a butterfly’s wings and decide to use something similar on a shirt.
Designers look at everything around them—nature, buildings, art, movies, and even people walking down the street—to get inspired.
Checking Out What’s Popular –
Designers also pay attention to what’s popular, or “trending.”
For example, if lots of people are wearing neon colors, a designer might think, “Hmm, I should create a bright, fun outfit too!”
They keep an eye on what other designers are doing, what people are buying, and what’s happening in the world. This helps them create clothes that people will love.

SKETCHING THE DREAM: DRAWING IT OUT!
Once a designer has some cool ideas, it’s time to put them on paper.
But how do they do that? Let’s find out!
Sketching the Outfit –
Designers start by drawing their ideas.
It’s kind of like drawing your own outfit in a notebook, but way more detailed.
They think about things like, “Should this dress have long sleeves or short ones? What kind of buttons would look best on this jacket? Should the shirt be loose or tight?” They draw all these details so they can see what the clothes will look like before they’re made.
Adding Notes –
But drawing isn’t the only thing designers do.
They also write down notes about the colors, fabrics, and any special features the clothes will have. This helps everyone who works on the clothes understand exactly what the designer has in mind. It’s like writing a secret code that only people who make clothes can read!
CHOOSING THE PERFECT FABRIC: WHAT WILL THE CLOTHES BE MADE OF?
Now that the designer has a drawing, it’s time to think about what the clothes will be made of. The fabric is super important because it affects how the clothes look, feel, and move.
How It Feels –
Some fabrics are soft and cozy, like the flannel pajamas you might wear in the winter.
Others are shiny and smooth, like the satin ribbon you see on fancy dresses. Designers pick fabrics based on how they want the clothes to feel when you wear them.
They might choose stretchy fabric for a sports outfit so you can move easily, or thick, warm fabric for a winter coat.
Colors and Patterns –
Fabrics come in all sorts of colors and patterns.
Designers choose the ones that match their vision for the outfit.
Sometimes, they even design their own patterns! Imagine having a t-shirt with a pattern that no one else in the world has—that’s what a designer can create!

THE BLUEPRINT: MAKING A PATTERN FOR THE CLOTHES
Once the fabric is chosen, the next step is to figure out how to cut it.
But how do designers know where to cut?
That’s where something called a “pattern” comes in.
Creating the Pattern –
This is done by the pattern makers.
A pattern is like a blueprint or a map that shows where to cut the fabric. It’s made up of different pieces that, when put together, form the shape of the clothing.
For example, a shirt pattern might have pieces for the front, back, sleeves, and collar.
Pattern makers take the designer’s sketch and turn it into a pattern that can be used to cut out the fabric pieces.
Making Sure It Fits –
But wait, what if the shirt is too small or too big?
Designers and pattern makers have to make sure the pattern is just the right size. They might adjust the pattern so the clothes will fit perfectly on different body sizes.
It’s like making sure your favorite sneakers fit just right—not too tight and not too loose.
Stay tuned for Part 2, where we’ll continue exploring the amazing roles of a fashion designer, from bringing their designs to life to showing them off to the world! Can’t wait to dive into the next steps of this secret journey!
